Beyond These Stars Adjacency Effects: Placement and Height Rules

The quick answer

Check a building’s Adjacency Effects before placing it. Buildings on different heights do not count for adjacency, so put the intended neighbours on the same level.

Read the placement preview

Select the building you want to place and inspect its Adjacency Effects. Move the preview between candidate tiles to compare the actual benefit or penalty.

Choose a site for the effect you need, rather than packing every building into one dense block. Keep roads and housing work range usable while you compare locations.

Keep the neighbours at the same height

Buildings at different terrain heights do not receive adjacency effects from one another. Use terraforming to create a shared level when the bonus depends on a neighbouring building.

After placing the building, check the relevant effect again. If it is missing, inspect:

  1. Whether the two buildings are on the same level.
  2. Whether the required building or terrain is actually adjacent.
  3. Whether the effect requires a particular number of neighbours.

Use your current tooltip values

Different buildings have different combinations of benefits and drawbacks. Read the values shown in your current game when comparing sites; a good location for one industry may be poor for another.
