Beyond These Stars Woodcutter and Sawmill: Unlock and Plank Production
The quick answer
In PC v1.0.2244, unlock the Sawmill by meeting the Toolsmith prerequisite and producing 10 Tools in the Toolsmith. Feed it Wood and power to make Planks, and keep space for Planks and Wood Waste.
Unlock the Sawmill
The PC v1.0.2244 Sawmill card requires Toolsmith and 10 Tools produced in the Toolsmith.
This is a building-specific production condition. Having 10 Tools in global storage is not equivalent, and Tools made in the Home Spaceship do not replace the stated Toolsmith milestone. Older demo references to 20 Tools describe a different build.
Run the Wood-to-Planks chain
- Place a Woodcutter where it can work with Forest.
- Provide roads, housing work range and all required workers.
- Supply the Sawmill with Wood.
- Connect power. Before Power Lines unlock, use direct adjacency to a working Burner Generator or Ore Smelter.
- Arrange storage or consumption for both outputs.
The v1.0.2244 Sawmill task uses the following recipe:
| Inputs per cycle | Outputs per cycle |
|---|---|
| 2 Wood + 1 Power | 3 Planks + 2 Wood Waste |
Why the Sawmill stops
Inspect the building’s local Work panel rather than only the global stockpile.
| State | Check |
|---|---|
| Missing input | Wood and power available for a full cycle |
| No power | Actual adjacency or Power Line connection, plus generator fuel and Soot capacity |
| No space | Both Planks and Wood Waste output buffers |
| No workers | Staffing, road access and housing range |
A Sawmill can have an empty Wood Waste output and still stop because its Planks output is full. For example, a local Planks buffer at 30/30 leaves no room for another cycle.
Configure nearby storage for the blocked output and check that goods can be moved. Adding another Sawmill before clearing the output bottleneck can reproduce the same problem.
